A "Lookie" at a Diva: Stella Nyambura Mwangi (STL)

I decided to write this post about my favourite gal and Diva Stella Nyambura Mwangi because she has managed to capture both the local and international audience with her talent and splendor. When she first waltzed into the Kenyan scene, I used to argue with a couple of my friends that she was a Jamaican by origin until I read her profile. My fascination began thereon.

Stella Nyambura Mwangi also known for stage name STL was born on 1 September 1986 in Nairobi. She  is a Norwegian-Kenyan Singer, Song Writer and Rapper. In 1991 Stella had to move to Norway with her family due to some political issues in her home country. She started to practice playing music when she was just eight years old. She is not just a singer, but also plays the piano.

Stella started her career back in 1998 as a recording artist, by joining African youth group The Rise where she released her first album ever Maroon. She was  later discovered by Big City Music producer, Tom Roger “Rumblin” Rogstad, who actually was responsible for launching Stella’s career as a African hip-hop artist. Big City immediately started working with Stella on solo material. Since then Stella has made quite an impression with her single “Take It Back”, “The Dreamer”,  “She Got It/Kool Girls”, some of which were East Africa's number one hit singles and favourited by MTV Base and Channel O.  In Norway she has also been the supporting act for artists such as Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Flo-Rida and most recently Mohombi.

I was thrilled to learn that some of her singles have been used in films such as American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile and Save the last dance II, and also in TV-series such as CSI: NewYork, Ghost WhisperersScrubs among others. She has won several awards including; the Kisima Awards as the most promising artist of the year, Clops Awards and Jeermaan Awards. She further became one of the most popular singers in Norway after winning the Melodi Grand Prix 2011.  Stella hits are enjoyed in as far and wide as East and Central Africa.

Her most difficult moment came when she lost her father who was involved in a hit and run car accident in Norway. Her father, 54 years old Jeff Mwangi Kwirika is to be buried at his home in Kenya , Maragua county as was his wish.  The family is holding a funeral service in Norway this Friday 10th February 2012.  Stella is still trying to cope with the sudden loss of her dad which seems to have had quite a blow to her and her family. My heartfelt condolences to her and her family in this sad period and my prayer is for God to give them comfort to be able to overcome the loss of their loved one.

I still intend to and will continue to exploit Stella's music especially listening to some tunes that have actually become the theme song in my head: "Lookie Lookie", "Biashara ni Biashara", "Hula Hoop", Haba Haba among several others.
